David and Goliath in New Mexico, or, Small Fry versus the Santa
Fe Ring: Violence, Romance & Outlawry in northern New Mexico
land grants.

9781607254164_p0_v1_s600Albuquerque writer Ruben Salaz Marquez, author of the The Santa Fe Ring, will
sign his book and provide historical comment on the 19th century lawyer and U.S.
Senator Tom Catron and the allied Santa Fe Ring.

Award-winning Albuquerque author, songwriter and recording artist Jim Jones will comment on and sign his historical novel trilogy, Rustler’s Moon, Colorado Moon and Waning Moon. An innocent Jared Delaney rides into Colfax County and finds himself in the midst of the late 19th century land fights that raged in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Jim will discuss how the real events that occurred then inspired his fictional narrative and how real historical personalities are reflected in the novels. Following his comments, Jim will present a medley of related songs from his CD Borrowed Time. Included in the medley are three songs—”Rustler’s Moon,” “Colorado Moon” and the premiere presentation of “Waning Moon”—directly related to the novels.

Santa Fe retired attorney and historian Michael Scarborough comments and signs his Trespassers on Our Own Land! The Memoirs of Juan Valdez and the June 5, 1967, Tierra Amarilla Courthouse Raid. Reies Lopez Tijerina, Patsy Tijerina, Benny Naranjo, Judge Scarborough, Dave Cargo. Why the very names conjure up shoot ‘em up times in the Old West! Juan Valdez, whose family lived in the area for countless generations, was the first of Tijerina’s lieutenants in the courthouse. Valdez related his memoirs to Mike Scarborough over the last several years and shortly thereafter passed away. This presentation will focus on the Valdez family history, events leading up to the raid, and the aftermath of the event as seen from the eyes of one of it main participants. Mr. Scarborough will also comment on current cases involving land grants, the state and federal governments and avarice as practiced in 2013.

The gallery will also feature an exhibit of northern New Mexico landscapes by two local artists, watercolorist Ann Olson and oil painter Jo Ann Van Cleave.ahn
